The Blip Meets: Simis Gatenio

The Blip was very pleased to speak to artist Simis Gatenio.

Hi Simis! Thank you for meeting The Blip!

Firstly, Tell us a bit more about you - Where are you from? Have you had any formal art training?

Simis: Born in 1976 in Thessaloniki Greece where i still live and work. . My studies in art are:

2000- Graduated of Electronic Graphic Design School in Greece

2005- Diplome National d’ arts plastiques of ecole national de Saint Etienne-  France

The Blip was particularly intrigued by your cool, inky style! How would you describe your style?  What are your preferred mediums?

Simis: Mostly I describe my style as geometric abstract , semi abstract figurative. Its all about space, time, and the connections between love and death.

I like mostly pencil, acrylic and ink, mix of them mostly…. But also some times new media .

Are there any artists or exhibitions that have inspired you?

Simis: Many influences from artists. Max Ernst, Francis Bacon, Anselm Keifer, Felicien Tops, Matthew Barney.  I am often inspired by architecture or nature and technology.

How have you defined your style as your own? Or are you still building a personal style?

Simis: My style is a mix of many other styles. Building a personal style is a neverending story for me.

How do you find being an artist in a digital age? Do you ever have any problems with people sharing your work with out permission? Or worries about people copying your work?

Simis: I believe digital age is a very difficult age. It is a huge database of information, connections bad and good things. Also in art you see everything in one place, interesting art and not-so interesting art. I believe we are in the beginning of this digital age.  We will see many changes in the near future.

Yes many people sharing my art with out permission. But i think maybe this is ok for contemporary artworks if these people not doing that for profit. To copy my art is difficult! (Joke!)

If you could collaborate with any artist, musician, or even a brand- who would it be?

Simis: Anselm Kiefer or Bazelitz, I wish…… !Musician ….. maybe the band, Tool!  

What advice would you give other artists that are looking to have their work exhibited?

Simis: Keep it original as possible in these times. There is always a reason to strive to be creative, but there is not always a reason to exhibit…..

What do you do in your time away from the canvas? How do you seek inspiration?

Simis: Looking at nature, reading technology news …. playing video games and repairing pc’s (software and hardware).
